Industry is a place of construction and manufacturing of goods required by mankind. Researchers and engineers play a vital role in the selection of correct raw materials that suffice the needs of the manufacturing process. Based on the products, the properties of the materials required vary. For example, in construction sites, strength is an essential factor. Be it the construction of buildings, or developing parts of the automobile industry, high-quality materials are a must requirement. Modern construction focuses more on safety and structural stability. Companies are always looking forward to using the most suitable materials in their best forms that provide the properties of the parts. As we all know, steel is the most common material of choice in engineering and civil industries due to its durability, strength and versatility. It is also easily available, thus, making it affordable. It can also be restructured into frames, beams, rolls, columns, bars, girders, and plates as per requirement. Rolling of steel is essentially done in two processes: hot rolling and cold rolling.
Pinax is the provider of high-graded hot rolled steels which are a vital component of construction sites, making railway tracks, mining equipment, pipes and tubes, shelves, I-beams, automobile parts, etc.
How is hot-rolled steel prepared?
Steel, being a ductile material, is much more flexible and pliable, making it the most suitable raw material in any industry. It also has high heat tolerance and can withstand up to 870°C. Industries use both these properties to increase usability. By applying enough heat, you can change the structure and give it different shapes and properties. This is the theory behind the preparation of hot-rolled steel. The entire process takes place at a temperature above 1000°C. Steel billets are exposed to this temperature and passed through rolling machinery. The process is repeated multiple times until sheets of approx. 3mm widths are formed. Not much processing is required for its formation. This process is much easier than cold rolled steel formation which takes place at a much lower temperature.
Properties of hot rolled steel
The heating of steel beyond the recrystallization stage and gradual cooling of it at room temperature causes a change in the structural properties of the material. It increases the mechanical qualities, tensile strength, ductility and formability. However, since not much processing is required, most of the hot rolled steels have a coarser surface. However, it can be easily smoothened by grinding, sandblasting and acid-bath picking. Also since the hot steel shrinks slightly during the cooling stage, there is less degree of control over its final stage.
Advantages of Hot Rolled Steel
Hot-rolled steel offers multiple advantages that increase their use in industries. Some of the most common advantages are:
Lower price: Hot rolled steels are comparatively much cheaper than cold rolled steel. They require less processing and thus, less time in its manufacturing. Heat also makes steel easy to manipulate and gives the required shape.
No internal stress: Internal stress often results in cracks and tears. This can be risky for any type of construction and can lead to major accidents. Hence, before using them, relieving stress is very important. Hot-rolled steel has an extra advantage since the gradual cooling and normalizing process makes it free from internal stress. Thus, they are safe to use in construction sites.
More workability: Since high temperature makes it easier to give the required shape to steel, the overall process is easy and does not have many complications.
Higher malleability: Hot-rolled steel is more malleable than other types. It can be easily cut into the required shape, thus, increasing its importance and usage.
Uses of Hot Rolled Steel
Hot-rolled steel is commonly used in the construction of strong structures that provide support to buildings. They are used to make columns and beams, and steel structures. In railway tracks, this product helps in increasing stability and mitigating the impacts of the train wheels. They help to build safe and long-lasting tracks. In the automobile industry, hot rolled steel is the most preferred for components requiring higher thickness and durability. It is also used in the agricultural industry to make silos, barns, tractors and hydraulic components. Finally, the mining industry also greatly benefited from hot rolled steel for constructing support beams, ladders, grinding balls, and light rails.
